When to Visit Moab
Each season brings something different to Moab. Here's what to expect and how to plan.
The Short Answer
Spring (March-May) and Fall (September-November) are the best times to visit Moab for most visitors. The weather is comfortable for hiking and biking, the scenery is stunning, and the days are long enough to pack in plenty of adventure. But every season has its merits - read on to find the best time for your trip.
Spring
March - May
Weather
Temperatures range from the mid-40s to low 80s°F, with March being cooler and May warming up nicely. Expect cool mornings and pleasant afternoons. Spring can bring occasional rain showers and wind, especially in March and April. Nighttime temperatures can still dip into the 30s in early spring.
Best Activities
- • Hiking (ideal temperatures for all-day hikes)
- • Mountain biking (trails are in prime condition)
- • Scenic drives and photography (wildflowers in April-May)
- • Rock climbing (comfortable temps on the rock)
- • Canyoneering (after winter ice melts)
Crowd Levels
Spring is one of the busiest times in Moab. Spring break weeks in March and April bring heavy traffic to Arches. Easter weekend and Memorial Day weekend are especially crowded. Book accommodations 2-3 months in advance.
Tips
- • Reserve your Arches timed entry ticket as soon as they become available
- • Pack layers - a 30-degree temperature swing in one day is normal
- • Early-to-mid March offers fewer crowds with decent weather
- • Watch for wildflowers along Highway 128 and in the La Sal foothills
Summer
June - August
Weather
Summer in Moab is hot. Expect daily highs of 95-110°F from June through August. The sun is relentless with very little shade on most trails. July and August bring monsoon season with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms - beautiful to watch but they create real flash flood danger in slot canyons and dry washes.
Best Activities
- • River rafting and kayaking (the water feels amazing)
- • Paddleboarding on calm river sections
- • Early morning hikes (start before 7am, finish by noon)
- • Evening scenic drives after the heat breaks
- • Stargazing (some of the darkest skies in the US)
Crowd Levels
The extreme heat keeps many visitors away, so crowds are lighter than spring and fall. June is busier than July-August. You'll find better availability and sometimes lower prices on accommodations.
Tips
- • Carry and drink far more water than you think you need
- • Plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening only
- • Check flash flood warnings daily during monsoon season
- • The La Sal Mountains offer cooler temperatures for hiking (8,000-12,000ft)
- • Cooling towels and portable misting fans are game changers
Heat Safety: Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real dangers in Moab summers. Know the signs: dizziness, nausea, confusion, and stopping sweating. If in doubt, get to shade, drink water, and cool down. Don't attempt long exposed hikes when temps exceed 100°F.
Fall
September - November
Weather
Many locals consider fall the best season in Moab. Temperatures ease from the 80s in September to the 50-60s by November. The air is crisp, the light is golden, and the cottonwood trees along the Colorado River turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange. Early September can still be warm, but by October the weather is perfect.
Best Activities
- • Hiking (the best all-day hiking weather of the year)
- • Mountain biking (Moab Ho Down MTB festival in October)
- • Photography (golden hour light on red rock is unbeatable)
- • Scenic drives (fall colors along Highway 128 and La Sal Loop)
- • All outdoor activities are comfortable
Crowd Levels
Fall is the busiest time in Moab, especially September through mid-October. The combination of perfect weather and fall events draws huge crowds. Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend and Halloween weekend are especially packed. Book accommodations 3+ months in advance.
Tips
- • Book everything early - fall fills up fast
- • Late October and November offer fewer crowds with great weather
- • The fall color drive along Highway 128 is stunning
- • Bring warm layers for evenings and early mornings
- • Don't miss sunset at Dead Horse Point or Grand View Point
Winter
December - February
Weather
Winter brings cold but generally clear weather. Expect daytime highs of 35-50°F and nighttime lows in the teens to low 20s°F. Snow is possible but usually light and melts quickly at the lower elevations around town. The La Sal Mountains will have significant snow. Ice can form on shaded sections of trails, especially north-facing rock.
Best Activities
- • Hiking (shorter days but dramatic snow-dusted red rock)
- • Photography (snow on arches and canyon rims is breathtaking)
- • Scenic drives (roads are usually clear)
- • Fat biking (some shops offer winter bike rentals)
- • Enjoying Moab's restaurants and shops without crowds
Crowd Levels
Winter is Moab's quietest season. You'll often have trails and viewpoints to yourself. Accommodation prices drop significantly, and you won't need reservations for restaurants. Some seasonal businesses may close, but most core services remain open year-round. Holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year's) see a small bump.
Tips
- • Bring microspikes/ice cleats for icy trail sections
- • Days are short - plan hikes to finish well before dark
- • Check road conditions, especially for Island in the Sky
- • Lower prices make winter great for budget travelers
- • No timed entry reservation needed for Arches in winter
