Capture stunning red rock landscapes, arches, and dark skies
Photography in Moab
Moab is one of the most photogenic places on Earth. The combination of dramatic red sandstone formations, deep canyons, natural arches, and expansive desert vistas creates a landscape that looks incredible in any light — but truly comes alive during golden hour. Whether you shoot with a phone or a professional setup, Moab delivers frame-worthy moments at every turn.
The area's most iconic photo opportunities include Mesa Arch at sunrise in Canyonlands, where the arch glows orange from reflected canyon light below — arguably the most photographed sunrise in the American West. Delicate Arch at sunset offers the quintessential Utah image, with the freestanding arch silhouetted against the La Sal Mountains. And Dead Horse Point provides sweeping panoramas of the Colorado River's gooseneck bend that rival the Grand Canyon.
Beyond the landmarks, both Arches and Dead Horse Point are certified International Dark Sky Parks, making Moab one of the best places in the country for astrophotography. The Milky Way core is visible from March through October, and the minimal light pollution means you can shoot star trails and deep sky images from almost anywhere outside of town.
Iconic Photo Spots
Mesa Arch Sunrise
Canyonlands — Arrive 45 min before sunrise
The arch glows fiery orange from reflected light below. One of the most photographed spots in the park system. Gets crowded — arrive early for a tripod spot.
Delicate Arch Sunset
Arches — Plan for a 1.5 hour hike up
Utah's most iconic landmark bathed in golden light with the La Sal Mountains behind. The 3-mile round trip hike is worth every step.
Dead Horse Point Overlook
State Park — Sunrise or sunset
A 2,000-foot panoramic view of the Colorado River's gooseneck bend. Both sunrise and sunset work beautifully. Accessible paved viewpoint.
Highway 128 River Road
Any time — Best light morning/evening
Red cliffs, Fisher Towers, Castle Valley, and the Colorado River along one scenic corridor. Fall cottonwood colors in October are spectacular.
Milky Way at Arches
Dark Sky Park — New moon, March-October
Photograph the Milky Way framed through natural arches. Balanced Rock, Double Arch, and the Windows section all make incredible foregrounds.
Grand View Point
Canyonlands — Sunset or anytime
A 100-mile panorama from the tip of the Island in the Sky mesa. Layer after layer of canyons, buttes, and distant mountains.
Best Light
The red sandstone looks best during golden hour — the first and last hour of sunlight. Midday light is harsh and washes out the colors. For astrophotography, plan around the new moon and check the Milky Way position with a star-tracking app.
Best Seasons
Spring and Fall offer the most comfortable shooting conditions and dramatic skies. Winter snow on red rock is rare but stunning. Summer is best for Milky Way and astrophotography (core is highest in the sky June-August).
