Rafting & Water Sports
From calm family floats to Class IV whitewater on the Colorado River
River Adventures in Moab
The Colorado River runs right through the heart of Moab, making water-based adventures one of the most popular activities in the area. Whether you want a peaceful half-day float with the family or a multi-day whitewater expedition through remote desert canyons, Moab's river outfitters have you covered.
The most popular option for first-timers is the daily section — a calm stretch of the Colorado River just upstream from Moab that's perfect for families, paddleboarding, and scenic float trips. For more excitement, the Fisher Towers section offers fun Class II-III rapids with stunning red rock scenery. Experienced rafters can tackle Westwater Canyon (Class III-IV) or the legendary Cataract Canyon (Class III-V), a multi-day expedition through Canyonlands National Park.
Beyond rafting, the Colorado and Green Rivers offer excellent kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing. Several outfitters rent gear by the hour or day, and guided trips are available for all experience levels. Summer is prime season for water sports — the heat makes the river feel especially refreshing.
Popular River Sections
Daily Section
Calm water / Class I — Half day
Perfect for families and beginners. Gentle float through red rock scenery just upstream of Moab. Great for paddleboarding and kayaking too.
Fisher Towers Section
Class II-III — Half to full day
Fun rapids with dramatic Fisher Towers and Castle Valley views. A great step up from the daily section without being too intense.
Westwater Canyon
Class III-IV — Full day
Serious whitewater through a stunning black granite canyon near the Utah-Colorado border. Permit required. Best for experienced rafters.
Cataract Canyon
Class III-V — Multi-day expedition
The ultimate Moab rafting adventure — 100 miles through Canyonlands with big rapids, remote camping, and incredible canyon scenery. 3-5 days.
Best Season
May through September is prime rafting season. Water levels are highest in May-June from spring snowmelt (biggest rapids). Summer months (July-August) are hottest — the water feels amazing. Fall offers smaller crowds and pleasant temperatures.
Guided vs. Self-Guided
Most visitors use guided outfitters — they provide boats, gear, meals, and expert guides. Self-guided trips are possible on the daily section and Fisher Towers (rentals available in town). Westwater and Cataract Canyon require permits and significant experience.
