Hole 'N' the Rock

Hole N’ The Rock is a one-of-a-kind cultural and roadside attraction just south of Moab where a striking 5,000-square-foot home was painstakingly carved directly into a sandstone cliff by Albert and Gladys Christensen beginning in the 1940s. Over roughly 12 years Albert excavated tens of thousands of cubic feet of rock to create 14 rooms arranged around massive stone pillars, complete with built-in shelving, a deep bathtub hewn from stone, and a massive fireplace with a chimney drilled through the sandstone; many original furnishings, paintings by Albert, and Gladys’s collections remain on display, giving visitors a vivid sense of life in this remarkable dwelling. After Albert’s death in 1957, Gladys continued to operate the site, adding gift shops and a diner and welcoming tours. What started as a family home became a beloved quirky stop full of history, art, and personality. Beyond the carved house itself, the property today includes eclectic outdoor sculptures, an exotic petting zoo, general store, trading post, and fun memorabilia that make it a memorable part of many travelers’ Moab itineraries.

To visit Hole N’ The Rock from downtown Moab, head south on U.S. 191 for about 12 to 15 miles. The attraction sits right along the highway on the east side just past the rural roadside area. You’ll see the large “Hole N’ The Rock” lettering painted on the cliff face as you approach, and there’s plenty of parking at the pull-off so you can easily stop, explore the carved-into-rock home, gift shops, and outdoor curios without leaving the main road.
