About Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park is a vast wilderness of rock carved over millions of years by the Colorado and Green Rivers, which divide the park into three distinct districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, and The Maze. At 337,598 acres, it is Utah's largest national park, offering some of the most remote and rugged terrain in the American Southwest.
Island in the Sky, the most accessible district and closest to Moab, sits atop a broad mesa 1,000 feet above the surrounding canyon floor. Its dramatic overlooks at Grand View Point, Green River Overlook, and Upheaval Dome provide sweeping panoramas of the canyon country stretching to the horizon. The famous Mesa Arch frames sunrise views over Buck Canyon and the La Sal Mountains, making it one of the most photographed spots in the entire park system.
The Needles district, about 80 miles from Moab, is named for its colorful red and white banded sandstone spires and offers more backcountry hiking opportunities including the popular Chesler Park and Joint Trail loop. The Maze, the most remote and least visited district, requires high-clearance 4WD vehicles and significant backcountry experience.
The park preserves not only geological wonders but also a rich human history spanning thousands of years, from Ancestral Puebloan granaries and rock art panels to the historic trails used by ranchers and uranium prospectors. The park's dark skies and high desert silence create an environment of profound natural beauty.
