The Slickrock Trail opened in the late 60’s and was created by motorcyclists at the time. Dirt bikers ran loops here until the 90’s when mountain biking really started to take off. Today mountain bikes and dirt bikes still co-exist and take advantage of this one of a kind landscape.

Trailhead Info

Slickrock is in the Sand Flats Recreation area just a few minutes east of downtown Moab. On highway 191 in the center of town, turn east on 300 S. Follow 300 S. four blocks until the street ends. Hang right and then take the next left heading east on Millcreek Dr. Stay on this road through the stop sign. The road turns into Sand Flats road and climbs up onto the redrock bench. From the Entrance Station follow the road for 3.7 miles. The trailhead parking lot will be on your left.

Trail Info

The trail begins on the northern part of the parking lot. The slickrock loop and the practice loop are marked with white stripes for the entire trail. Follow the marks and you won’t get lost.

After 0.3 miles you will encounter the practice loop junction. Hang left here for the main trail. The riding will be up and down the slickrock. Part of the fun is determining the best “line” to follow as you make your way across the sandstone.

At 0.8 miles you’ll reach the second junction with the practice loop. Stay left for the main trail or if you want to try the practice loop go right. Many think the practice loop can be more challenging than the main trail. However, the practice loop is much shorter in distance.

At 2.3 miles the main trail splits. Most riders do the loop clockwise, but you can choose either direction. To follow the trail the traditional way, stay left and continue following the white markers on the sandstone. There are some really steep climbs and descents as you make your way through the loop. Your bike will grip and hold on the sandstone, but your cardio or nerves may give out. No shame in walking. Just enjoy the scenery and challenge of the ride.

Note: The slickrock trail crosses the Hells Revenge 4x4 trail several times. Keep following the white lines to stay on track. There are also many excellent viewpoints and vistas that are worth stopping and exploring on the short side trails. One last note, this area is exposed with very limited shade. If you are riding this trail in summer, be prepared for extreme heat. In winter, trails can be icy and snowy and should be avoided as well.
